Every Ocean Hughes (formerly known as Emily Roysdon) is a transdisciplinary artist and writer.
2019–2020 Hughes was a fellow at the Harvard Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University and in 2024 she won the inaugural Trellis Art Fund prize.
For over ten year Hughes has been a professor of fine art in Europe and the US as Sachs Visiting Professor, University of Pennsylvania; Professor of Art, Konstfack University of Art, Craft, and Design; DAAD Guest Professor, University of the Arts Bremen, Germany; and as visiting faculty at Columbia University and Cooper Union.
Her solo shows include Whitney Museum of American Art (2023), Studio Voltaire, London (2022), Moderna Museet, Stockholm (2022), Secession, Vienna (2015), and PARTICIPANT INC. New York (2015).
She has received commissions for new work from Tate Modern, London (2012, 2017), Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2014), and The Kitchen, New York (2010). Group exhibitions include Museum of Modern Art, New York (2014, 2023), Hammer Museum and Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2021), Future Generation Art Prize at the 55th Venice Biennale (2013), the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (2010), and the Whitney Biennial (2010). Hughes' films have been screened at the Berlinale, ICA London Biennial of Moving Images, Outfest, and Documenta 12 amongst many others.
Collaboration has been a central part of her practice including as editor and co-founder of the queer feminist journal and artist collective LTTR, lyric writing for several bands (The Knife, Colin Self, JD Samson & MEN) and costume design. She's curated several exhibitions and screening series at Tate Modern (London), Grand Arts (Kansas City), X Initiative (New York), AiR Gallery (Brooklyn), and Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions.
Hughes' work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Centre national des arts plastiques (cnap), Paris; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; and Kadist, Paris/San Francisco amongst others.
